Over the last few weeks, congress has been fiercly debating opening up offshore drilling in the hopes of lowering high gas prices before Congress adjourns for its monthlong break. Most Republicans want to lift a 1981 ban on offshore drilling, saying it will increase domestic oil supplies. But the Democratic leadership wants to keep the ban in place, arguing that more offshore drilling will have little effect on prices and could threaten the environment.

Republicans also want to legalize drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and allow the processing of oil shale on public lands in the West -- two actions Democrats also oppose. Oil shale is sedimentary rock with oil in it that has historically been considered too expensive to process. Several environmental risks are associated with extracting oil shale</p>

    •  It reminded me of a family dinner, where we were arguing fratically over the same side of an issue. The pro-side said, essentially, that we should drill it and tax it. For use on investment in maybe alternative energy sources, maybe paying down the debt, maybe possibly too many things. My own personal stance is that that is America's doomsday oil supply and it should never be touched, pure and simple. What, it's <3% of the world's oil supply, and we're just gonna sell it down the road? Sadly, we can only sell it once. Like it or not, we'll need to have an unhindered military strength if required. It'd be bad form to have to go around begging for oil to make jet fuel.. We OWN that oil and we'd be beholden to none.
    •  Excellent presentations on both sides.
